From Fleece to Dyed fleece
The fleece is then rinsed thoroughly in more warm water.
After shearing, the fleece is washed in warm soapy water to remove excess oil and soiling.
Plants which will be used for dye are layered in the iron pot together with the fleece and mordant (this "fixes" the dye so it will not wash out again. Cold water is added.
The mixture is heated over a peat fire until the dye is released from the plants. Then it is removed from the pot and dried.
